“Our number one goal was to produce a high quality Australian Made product with pride. Working with local leather Tanners and Woodworkers to produce superior quality products for Australians and Globally. Each Strop and Strop paste is hand made and tested for quality. We take pride in being the only Australian Made accredited company that produces strops and pastes. We are located in the beautiful NSW Hills district of Sydney and draw inspiration for our designs from the natural textures and colours surrounding us.”

Russell and his team have created some fantastic all-Australian sharpening gear; specifically strops, and pastes. I was brought in fairly early to help out with the woodworking end of the prototyping and production processes. This has been an incredibly eye-opening experience for me as I’ve not done any production work prior to this contract. I have learned an insane amount about production processes, QC, and deadlines as a result. Also, I really like the behind-the-scenese aspect of this kind of work. I do my bit, someone else does theirs, and we all make a bit of cash.

Hot tip: Bread Trays.

If you have a small shop and are attempting some large scale production work, get a bunch of random bread trays. They make incredible stackable drying racks. They also can help keep things organised in small groups. It’s easier to count racks than parts. If you can get 15 units on a tray, you can easily see at a glance that you have 150 units if there’s 10 full trays.

Don’t steal the trays, buy them; don’t be a dick.

Another handy side effect of this contract is the amount of sellable off-cuts that are created as a part of the process. Soon you will be able to find a bunch of 18mm BlackButt Edging in the Gradually Wizardly Store. :)
